My Style Icons

I never used to think I had style icons, but lately I've been looking to some characters (and I really do mean characters) for fashion inspiration. While you may not see me rocking armfuls of bangles or wearing thigh-high slits, you have to admire these fashionista(o)'s gumption.

Name: Iris Apfel
What she does: She's 91. She just has to sit there and look fabulous.
Favorite quote: (on getting older):"When your mind is busy, you don’t hurt so much."
Why she's great: If anyone else wore what she wore, they would look ridiculous. There will only ever be one Iris Apfel.
How to Iris yourself: Pile on the accessories, break fashion rules, don't be matchy-matchy.
Name: Leandra Medine, or "The Man Repeller"
Favorite quote (on defining a "Man Repeller"): “Manrepelling: outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls, shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.”
Why she's great: She's not your cookie-cutter blogger clad in neutrals and 5" name-brand heels. Yes, she wears high-end, but she also showcases her swoonworthy collection of vintage pieces. Oh, and as the name of her blog states, she's not concerned with a man's opinion. In short, she's a rockstar.
How to make yourself a Man Repeller: Experiment with trends, don't take yourself too seriously, and definitely don't concern yourself with other's opinions...wear what YOU want with WHAT you want.
Name: Rachel Zoe
Favorite quote: In my mind, being overdressed is not a bad thing at all. What’s the worst-case scenario? That you are the best-dressed person in the room? Who cares!
Why she's great: Well, for starters, she's arguably the most widely-known celebrity stylist. She's about dressing for your personality, not just wearing something because it's "trendy". I love that.
How to Rachel Zoe yourself: Step up classics. With Zoe, I often have to double-take at a picture to realize she's actually just wearing jeans and a shirt. Her style is always classy and classic, but with a twist. She wears a lot of black, but she's daring with her accessories, so it never feels boring.
Name: Emily Schuman of "Cupcakes and Cashmere"
Favorite quote: “I don't typically pay attention to trends. Instead, I wear what flatters my body most and makes me happy."
Why she's great: Besides her blog being one of my rotating favorites, I love her style because it always seems effortless, yet polished.
Look like Emily by: Simple silhouettes in nudes and pastels. Edge up your look with special pieces like customized jewelry.
Name: Bryan Boy
Favorite quote: "Everyone should learn how to Fendi for themselves"
Why he's great: He's a snob and he owns it. His no-sugarcoat attitude and fearless fashion sense is what makes his blog so awesome. Oh, and he can put any combination of ridiculous things together and it somehow looks good. Furry vest, high-top sneakers and women's pants? Why not.
Be like Bryan Boy: Mix patterns, wear fur, and in every case, more is really more.
